Having previously served nine years on the Woodland Park Board of Education—including four as president—I understand both the complexity and responsibility of school board leadership. I’m ready to bring experienced, student-centered, and community-informed leadership back to the board. Below are the key priorities I will champion to help our schools, students, and community thrive.
Strong schools depend on responsible financial management. In recent years, our district has faced troubling audit findings and inconsistent financial reporting. During my time on the Board of Education, we weathered years of frozen state funding—yet still maintained balanced budgets and grew our fund balance. I understand the complexities of school finance and the importance of transparency. I will work to ensure budgets are accurate, fund balances are healthy, priorities are aligned with student needs, and funding supports attractive teacher compensation, robust extracurriculars, and well-maintained facilities.
Trust begins with how decisions are made. A healthy board is made up of individuals with differing backgrounds who are committed to listening to students, parents, and educators—engaging in thoughtful, public discussion before taking action. I believe in collaborative, transparent leadership that keeps students at the center of every decision. I’m committed to fostering respectful dialogue, joint decision-making, and restoring confidence in our school board. Reestablishing trust with district families will be crucial to stabilizing student enrollment and inspiring families to return to WPSD. Rebuilding trust within the district will allow us to retain and attract exceptional staff. Regaining trust in the community will foster the kind of collective problem-solving we need to face complex challenges and create meaningful progress.
Our schools are a vital part of what makes Woodland Park a vibrant place to live. When schools, families, local government, and community organizations work together, everyone benefits—especially our students. I’m committed to restoring and strengthening partnerships with city and county governments and agencies, local businesses, and other key stakeholders. I will also work to ensure open lines of communication so the entire community is informed and engaged in both our celebrations and our challenges. Our students and community thrive when we all work together for the success of the next generation.
Charter and traditional public schools need to coexist in a way that benefits all students. In our district, tension between Merit Academy and traditional schools has caused confusion and division. I believe we must acknowledge the concerns on all sides, and commit to thoughtful decision making that considers all schools. We need to clarify the relationship between the Board of Education and Merit Academy, and ensure fair and transparent financial arrangements. Through openness, fact-based communication, and mutual respect, we can begin to rebuild unity. Every student in the Woodland Park School District deserves to feel valued and supported, no matter which school they attend.
We also need to remain sharply focused on continued academic achievement, balanced class sizes, and offering a broad spectrum of learning opportunities, so students graduate with meaningful choices for their futures. Equally important is finding creative, sustainable ways to preserve and enhance extracurricular programs—from athletics to the arts — so that we cultivate well-rounded learners ready for life beyond Woodland Park.
